20 MOST POPULAR TAPAS IN SPAIN

Here is a small guide to tapas in Spain or, if you are one of those who like to experiment in the kitchen, we give you some of these tapas ideas so that you can prepare them yourself at home. Here are some of the most typical tapas in Spain.

 

SPANISH OMELETTE

It is usually ordered as "pincho de tortilla". The most traditional omelette is made with eggs, potatoes and olive oil, but many people also add onion.

 

PATATAS BRAVAS AND PATATAS ALIOLI (fried potatoes with garlic mayonnaise)

These are fried potatoes covered in a tasty sauce. The brava is spicy and the alioli is made mainly with olive oil and garlic.

 

HAM

If it is Iberian, all the better. It is one of the most popular Spanish products with visitors and in tapas it is usually accompanied by bread or picos and colines (small pieces of crusty bread typical of Spain).

 

CHEESE

In Spain there are many varieties and it is common to be offered a local cheese. Some well known cheeses are Manchego (typical of Castilla - La Mancha), Idiazábal (Basque Country), Roncal (Navarra), Mahón (Balearic Islands) or Majorero (Canary Islands).

 

OLIVES

These are olives and the most popular ones are served pickled. In fact, pickles in general are common in tapas. There are also stuffed olives (usually with anchovies or peppers).

 

SQUID

Battered with olive oil and served hot. They are popular all over the country, especially in the form of a ring.

 

CROQUETTES

Although ham croquettes are the most traditional, you will find them with increasingly popular fillings such as mushrooms, spider crab, squid, prawns, cod or varieties of cheese with a strong flavour such as Cabrales.

 

MUSSELS

They are mainly steamed and can be served with lemon or with finely chopped and seasoned tomato, onion and pepper.

 

TUMACA BREAD

Bread, tomato, olive oil, garlic (optional) and salt. It is typical of Catalonia, where it is also called "pa amb tomàquet". Depending on your taste, you can add ham, sausages, omelette or cheese.

 

MORCILLAS AND CHORIZOS

Together with ham, these are two of the most popular pork sausages in tapas. The former is made with rice and the latter are prepared, for example, grilled or cooked in cider. Other popular pork tapas are picadillo (minced and marinated meat), chicharrones (pork rinds) and torreznos (rashers of bacon), made mainly with bacon.

 

GILDA

This is a classic from the Basque Country, where tapas are called "pintxos". It is a pincho or banderilla made of anchovies, olives and chilli.

 

CRACKED EGGS

Also known as "huevos estrellados", these are fried eggs with a fairly runny yolk and placed on a bed of ham and fried potatoes. When the eggs are broken or "crashed", the yolk covers the rest of the ingredients. It is usually accompanied by bread to "dip" in the egg yolk. There are also other popular versions that replace the ham with eels, prawns or other pork sausages.

 

CUTTLEFISH

Grilled and accompanied by mayonnaise or aioli sauce. In many places, fried cuttlefish (similar to cuttlefish but smaller) are popular and are known in Andalusia as "puntillitas".

 

PAELLA

This is the most popular recipe in the Valencian Community and its main ingredient is rice, which is accompanied by garden produce and, depending on the case, meat or seafood.

 

OCTOPUS A FEIRA

It is usually served on a wooden board and is typical of Galicia. For this reason, it is known as "octopus a la gallega". It is presented cooked and chopped, sprinkled with salt and paprika and accompanied by olive oil.

 

WRINKLED POTATOES

You will enjoy them especially if you visit the Canary Islands, where they are accompanied by mojo (a local sauce with an intense flavour). The most famous are made with a small potato from the area that is boiled with plenty of salt.

 

PESCAITO FRITO

Fresh fish battered in olive oil. They are most common in Andalusia, where they are often served in a paper cone with a tasty marinade. 

 

ENSALADILLA

It is a cold dish made with boiled potatoes, mayonnaise, tuna, egg and various finely chopped vegetables and pulses, such as carrots, peas or beans.

 

MIGAS

It mainly consists of bread crumbled and fried with olive oil and numerous ingredients that add flavour to the dish. These can be chorizo, bacon, peppers, garlic, onions... There are many variants, some add grapes, others substitute the meat with cod...

 

SALMOREJO AND GAZPACHO

These two cold soups are typical of Andalusia, especially in summer, and have tomato and olive oil as their main ingredients.
